Sustainable Features

Glen Bernard has a significant commitment to environmental sustainability in all aspects of facilities and program.   The requirements for hydro, propane, gasoline and oil are reduced wherever possible and the shift is made to solar energy.  Lights are energy efficient and materials are recycled wherever possible.  Solar power services several camp buildings and solar hot water is utilized in washrooms and shower houses.  Composting toilets are also a part of the focus on conserving the natural environment.

A three-story, solar powered building, a weather station, the Living Lightly Lab and 700 acres of forest provide space for campers to develop their skills in environmental literacy and stewardship.  A solar powered boat demonstrates the use of solar energy in a purely recreational sphere.

Cabins

Campers sleep in cabins accommodating 8 to 10 people. Counsellor cabins are separate but close by. Shower and toilet facilities are centrally located in each section.

Dining Hall

Everyone assembles at the dining hall for meals that are carefully planned to meet Ministry of Health and Ontario Camping Association standards for water, food preparation, sanitation and … camper approval!

Health and safety are a primary concern at GBC. A resident doctor is available. Counsellors are available throughout the night.
