Camp Location

  • near the village of Sundridge, Ontario (three hours' drive north of Toronto)
  • on 700 acres of land along the east side of Lake Bernard

Camp History

  • founded by Mary S. Edgar in 1922
  • John and Barbara Gilchrist directed GBC from 1956 to 1977
  • since 1977, Jocelyn Palm has been the owner and director

Facilities

  • accommodation in cabins for 8 to 10 people
  • many spacious building permit indoor activities on rainy days
  • solar water heaters in shower and toilet facilities centrally located in each section
  • energy efficient lighting throughout the camp (LED & CFL)

GBC Staff

  • 3:1 ratio of campers:staff
  • majority of staff were GBC campers and participated in Assistant Counsellor program
  • staff are a minimum of age 18
  • physician on site at all times

Food

  • great-tasting meals
  • we can accommodate most food allergies (prior notice required)
  • menu meets standards set by Canada’s Food Guide

Accredited Member of OCA

  • the Ontario Camping Association (OCA) sets operating standards for member camps.
  • Glen Bernard adheres to over 400 separate OCA standards in the areas of: Health & Safety, Leadership, Food Service & Maintenance, Staffing, Programming, and Administration.
  • GBC also meets standards set by the Provincial and Federal Ministries of Health, Environment and Transportation.
  • these standards help manage risk and ensure a safe, well-organized environment for all campers and staff.

  • inspected and certified by the Ontario Ministry of Education to grant secondary school credits
  • campers in the Pacer section, who have completed Canadian Grade 10 (or equivalent), can earn an Ontario Grade 11 credit in Leadership and Peer Support.
  • Assistant Counsellors can earn a Grade 12 credit in Recreation and Fitness Leadership
